Role & approach
FamCare is a self-initiated UX research project developed during my studies, driven by a personal interest in informal care and care coordination. The project focused on setting up and executing early-stage research and exploring potential solution directions. Interviewing, journey mapping and co-creating with family members and healthcare professional. Research was conducted with informal caregivers/family members of residents (with dementia) in nursing home: Thebe De Vloet
Problem
Informal caregivers and families often coordinate care across multiple disconnected channels, such as phone calls, messages, notes, and institutional systems. This fragmentation creates stress, miscommunication, and uncertainty about responsibilities, especially in emotionally demanding situations.
Solution
Based on research insights, I explored an early-stage concept for a digital care coordination platform that could provide a shared overview of care tasks, communication, and responsibilities. The concept was a communication and information tool, to explore how digital support might reduce mistakes in caregiving (protocols), lower miscommunication between family members and healthcare professionals, creating a shared understanding.
Limitations
This solution was not fully validated and served as an early direction rather than a finished product. Early research showed that healthcare workers lacked time to maintain an existing internal tool. FamCare therefore explored guided task execution and instruction for family members, to better align with care protocols and prevent family participation from becoming counterproductive with increasing workload for the healthcare professionals.
